How to integrate the fact of our existences with the notion that we were never meant to survive; how to bring our children into a queendom not yet assured; how to balance the breaths of our beings between forgiving too easily/ and never giving at all. These remain only a noteworthy sampling of the questions posed by the striking, indomitable spirit of Audre Lorde a woman who described herself as a "Black, feminist, lesbian, mother, warrior poet." So many of us ached to learn the answers to the same, and similar, queries. Audre stood proud and strong amongst us, unflinchingly speaking her truths. In this special edition of The Cancer Journals, Aunt Lute Press offers us an opportunity to renew or gain our hold on the intimacy of Lorde's most personal writings: living every moment until her final passing of cancer. In her lifetime, Lorde's work did not reach the audience it so vastly deserved. In recent years, we have noted an increased interest in the compelling voice and truths Audre brought to our communities. We commend Aunt Lute for reissuing The Cancer Journals. As always, we at STANDARDS recommend highly, and without hesitation, the entire oeuvre of Audre Lorde's works, from her poignant essays in The Cancer Journals, to her vastly important poems and her self-described "biomythography": Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. Selected works by Audre Lorde available directly from Aunt Lute Books. For more information on this great literary and cultural figure, see the STANDARDS' Tribute to Audre Lorde. |
